I Caught Up On Some Movies…

Spent some time on planes recently and for me, long distance flights are an opportunity to catch up on movies I otherwise wouldn’t have gone out of my way to. Here are my thoughts on them.

  1. Southpaw

I watched this movie and wondered why I didn’t hear or see any unending reviews for this movie because I completely enjoyed it. I keep saying Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the best actors of our time and this movie is part of his stellar resume. He played a white boy who acts “urban” and it didn’t feel put on at all. Maybe it was just me but Forest Whitaker was kinda wack in this movie. I kept thinking Denzel would have been a better fit. I recommend!!

2. The End of The Tour

I wanted to see this movie because Jason Siegel got major rave reviews and Oscar buzz playing troubled writer, David Foster Wallace. It told the story of then Rolling Stone writer, David Lipsky following Wallace on a book tour. The movie was just there. Nothing exciting. Not sure I would recommend it but if Siegel indeed gets the noms, I won’t be mad.

3. Dope

I should be spanked for not seeing this movie. To be fair, the previews didn’t do the movie justice and didn’t make me want to see it. It was such a clever movie that touched on many topics – race, being an outcast, growing up in a rough neighborhood etc. But it did it in a fun way that wasn’t tedious to watch. Casting was perfect and the music (Pharrell had a hand in it) was great. Rick Famuyiwa did a great job directing this. I recommend!

4. Mad Max: Fury Road

I heard only good things about this movie but I’d be lying if I said I understood what was going on. Taking sleep breaks probably didn’t help. I mean, I understood the gist of the movie but there were some holes I didn’t get. It had great action sequences and visuals I’ll give them that and Charlize was great as the heroine. If you love action movies, I’d recommend.

5. Pitch Perfect 2

I totally didn’t see the need for a sequel for this movie and expected to dislike this movie but I gotta tell you, I enjoyed it. It’s as corny as expected and why is Rebel Wilson a thing?  She is quite annoying. The music numbers were really enjoyable and the rival group – German Sound Machine, was nothing short of amazing. I found myself singing along and nodding my head. For a fun, poppy time, I recommend.
