It was all over the news how Patriots tight end, Aaron Hernandez was arrested for the murder of Odin Lloyd, who happened to be his fiancee’s sister’s boyfriend. During the course of the trial, he was indicted for two other murders of two immigrants from Cape Verde. He was found guilty for killing Odin Lloyd but two days after being acquitted for the other murders, Aaron Hernandez was found dead in his cell from an apparent suicide. Leaving behind letters for his fiancee, daughter and his lawyer. Why would a 23 year old who had so much going for him go down this path?
This documentary truly and very adeptly does its best to connect the dots in Aaron’s life to show how he got here. Every single scene was just a series of twists and turns, there’s no way you watch and not have one or two “oh shit!” moments. Besides all the twists and turns, the timeline and sequencing of this doc was completely top notch. It was done in such a way that you just wanted to see what happened next even though you already know what happened. The recorded phone calls while Hernandez was in prison and security footage really made for a compelling story.
All the characters in Aaron’s life from childhood absolutely did not set him up for a good future. His mom, his dad even his cousin who was his ride or die and went to jail while she had cancer because she refused to testify against him. They all contributed to the demons in him, in their own way.
It was so odd seeing his fiancee supporting him on one side and her sister on the other with Lloyd’s family. An autopsy revealed that Hernandez suffered from CTE, the common brain disease found in a lot of football players. Personally, I don’t think this contributed to his reckless behavior.
Post doc, something I found interesting is that Aaron killed himself in April 2017 and in June 2018, his fiancee had another baby girl and has never revealed the father and the conspirator in me wonders if that baby is Hernandez’s and they found a way to have alone time. I also wonder how she never got in trouble with the law also because to me, there was no way she new absolutely nothing.
Overall, you don’t have to be a sports fan to enjoy this one. It definitely will capture your attention in all 3 episodes.
