Who Would I Give The Oscar To? – My 2019 Picks

Image result for 2019 oscar picks and predictions

Last year, was the first time I went H.A.M and did predictions for all categories. Probably because my coworker had asked me to be part of the pool. I was very ready last year and by now, had even seen all the short films. This year, I have not seen as many movies as I would have liked to so I’ll go back to my old format of doing my picks and who I would give it to if I could, for the major categories.

Best Picture

Black Panther
BlacKkKlansman
Bohemian Rhapsody
The Favourite
Green Book
Roma
A Star Is Born
Vice

This is a tough call and I don’t think I can highlight one. Let it be clear that I think Roma is going to win but if I had to pick I wonder who I would vote for. I think Black Panther for so many reasons beyond it being just a movie. Enjoyability factor, I really enjoyed Green Book and A Star Is Born. The Favourite was a delight and Bohemian Rhapsody was pure fun. Gun to head though, I think I’d probably pick A Star is Born.

Lead Actor

Christian Bale – Vice
Bradley Cooper –  A Star Is Born
Willem Dafoe – At Eternity’s Gate
Rami Malek – Bohemian Rhapsody
Viggo Mortensen – Green Book

Make no mistake that this is a tough category because every single person on here is deserving and knocked it out the park. I particularly enjoyed Viggo in Green Book but Rami Malek really was amazing as Freddie Mercury. He is my pick and I also think he will win.

Lead Actress

Yalitza Aparicio – Roma
Glenn Close – The Wife
Olivia Colman – The Favourite
Lady Gaga – A Star Is Born
Melissa McCarthy – Can You Ever Forgive Me?

She is just who I enjoyed overall, granted as much as her campaigning has been about how her character is so far from her real life, I don’t believe that. It’s easy to say she was playing herself but she is not a natural actress. On that note, I know there is no way the Academy will let her have an Oscar before Glenn Close, so this is Glenn Close’s to lose.

Supporting Actress

Amy Adams – Vice
Marina de Tavira – Roma
Regina King – If Beale Street Could Talk
Emma Stone – The Favourite
Rachel Weisz – The Favourite

My pick and will win. Regina King about to be an Oscar winner, y’all

Supporting Actor

Mahershala Ali – Green Book
Adam Driver – BlacKkKlansman
Sam Elliott – A Star Is Born
Richard E. Grant – Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Sam Rockwell – Vice

He really did a good job in this movie and I am in awe that they are really about to give the same black man. a second Oscar in the span of 3 years. A little niggly part of me is wondering if Sam Elliott will pull an upset. He is old and beloved (and white)

Director:

Spike Lee – BlacKkKlansman
Pawel Pawlikowski – Cold War
Yorgos Lanthimos – The Favourite
Alfonso Cuarón – Roma
Adam McKay – Vice

My pick is Barry Jenkins and the fact that he is not nominated is a travesty. Based on the amazing visuals then Cuaron is my pick.
