My Guilty Pleasure: Lip Sync Battle

Lip Sync Battle is a show on Spike TV that pits celebs together as they lipsync to songs of their choice. Hosted by LL Cool J along with Chrissy Teigen as a color commentator – no really that’s her title. She basically wears tight clothes, sings along with them and makes a comment here and there. There are two rounds to the show. The first is just a regular lip sync with no fan fare while in the second round the celebs can go all out complete with costumes, back up dancers and choreography. In between, we are treated to backstage faux smack talk between the celebs and in the end the winner is decided by audience applause.

Before this show debuted, you might have found it familiar because we were first introduced to it as a bit on Jimmy Fallon’s show (it was John Krasinki’s idea). You might remember some of the popular ones by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Stone and Tom Cruise. Krasinski and Stephen Merchant then decided to turn it into its own show and pitched it to NBC, who turned it down. A few more rejections and the show found a home on Spike TV.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I heard about the show but I added it to my DVR anyways and took my time getting to it. When I did and a few episodes in I realized how much the show made me smile. It’s such a silly show that’s quite fun and it makes you view celebs at their loosest. What also makes it work, is the pairings. The producers do a pretty good job of pairing the right people together that makes for good laughs and a good show. Some examples – Salt vs. Pepa, Taraji P Henson vs. Terrence Howard, The Rock vs. Jimmy Fallon etc. It’s especially fun when they have couples on. The show is such a ray of sunshine that it even made Iggy Azalea (who was on vs. her fiance, Nick Young) seem likeable.

The second season premieres on Thursday, January 7 and has Channing Tatum and his wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum as the contestants. If you haven’t seen an episode before, give it a shot and tell me what you think. You can also check out some memorable performances below:
