My Thoughts on #Passing

Passing (2021) - IMDb

Day 3

Passing is a movie based on a 1929 book of the same name. It tells the story of two childhood friends, Irene (Tessa Thompson) and Clare (Ruth Negga) who run into each other as adults. Irene is now married with two kids as is Clare, except Clare is married to a white man and is also passing as a white woman. The movie follows the journey of their new found friendship and dynamic as Clare spends more time with Irene and her husband.

Yea, I did not like this movie y’all. First off, these women look obviously not white, so the fact that they passed at any point was so distracting and I couldn’t take it seriously or believe that everyone saw Clare as the blonde bombshell. I think the casting could have been better, we have options in racially ambiguous looking actresses and also, they don’t have to be well known names. Also, is it just me or is Tessa Thompson a bit one note?

I didn’t find the story compelling and like I have mentioned before, I am not a fan of open ended scenes and the ending was definitely a bit confusing and ambiguous for me. I re-watched it multiple times and had a different thought each time.

Overall, I found it slow and a tad boring. Have you seen it and think otherwise? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
