Recommendations For The Documentary Lovers

Documentaries have always been a favorite of mine. Maybe it’s the realness of it. Hearing first accounts of things on any topic – both sad and happy. Maybe it’s how two people could watch a documentary and come out with different takes. Yes, they could be biased but none the less I still enjoy them.

While building its roster of shows, Netflix didn’t forget this genre and going through the library you definitely won’t lack for it, especially in the true crime genre. In case this is your forte, here are some docs that you might want to check out:

  • The Playbook – This follows 5 high profile coaches in different sports including Doc Rivers and Patrick Mouratoglou. Do yourself a favor and watch the episode that features Jose Mourinho – it’s hilarious!
  • Journey of An African Colony: The Making of Nigeria – Tells the story of Nigeria’s history of slave trade, it’s colonial occupation and eventual independence. Produced and narrated by a historian and former Commissioner for Justice, it begins the story with women who witnessed the first independence day – pretty cool and drills down to the trauma that still plagues the country.
  • American Murder: The Family Next Door – Of all the documentaries, this is probably the one you have heard about. It walks us through infamous Chris Watts, who killed his wife and two daughters and denied it. Due to his wife’s being very active on Facebook, there is a lot of footage shown from their lives when she was alive. We also get additional footage – including his confession from security cams and cops body cam. Sad story.
  • Bad Boy Billionaires – This was supposed to drop September 2nd but was delayed due to legal action from one of the subjects. It follows Indian billionaires whose downfall was brought about by their greed and fraudulent activities.
  • Song Exploder – Adapted from a podcast the series has musicians taking apart their songs, piece by piece and telling the story of how they were made. It features Alicia Keys and Ty Dolla Sign.
  • Deaf U – This series follows a group of students on campus at Gallaudet University, a university for the deaf and hard of hearing in Washington DC. It’s interesting to watch a world most able bodied people don’t even think about. One of the producers is Nyle DiMarco who you may remember as the first deaf winner of America’s Next Top Model.

A few titles to keep you busy. Let me know if you have seen or plan to see any of them!
