A Show You Should Be Watching – “Power”

Yes! You should be watching “Power” on Starz now!

Ok, I’ll be a little less dramatic. “Power” is this little drama airing on Starz. Created by Courtney Kemp Agboh and Executive Produced by 50 Cents (yes, the rapper). It is a show that focuses on James St Patrick (played by the oh so delicious Omari Hardwick) who goes by the nickname, Ghost. Ghost and his childhood best friend, Tommy (Joseph Sikora) have just opened up a club and we find out that the club is a cover up for their drug business.

On the outside, James looks like he has it all. Well fitted suits, nice chauffered cars, nice home and the perfect family with wife, Tasha (Naturi Naughton) and two kids. Ghost seems to be tired of the drug dealing life and is ready to go legit but he finds out that it is hard to leave the only life that he has known and lived for so long. We get to see how it unfolds in his personal and business life with some twists and turns in every episode.

When I watched the pilot, it wasn’t perfect but I truly enjoyed it and was buying whatever they were selling. The storyline is fully developed and well thought out. The characters are at their A-game, especially my favorite – Tommy. Joseph Sikora plays the street white best friend so well and brings a certain flavor to the character.

My one complaint was with Naturi Naughton who plays Tasha. I do understand what the goal was. Which is, to find a character that was both lady like but from the street also. Naturi does capture that (more the street than classy lady) but there’s not a lot of chemistry between her and Omari Hardwicke. I am warming up some more as the episodes go by. Oh and La La Anthony (who keeps giving this woman roles??) is a recurring character as Tasha’s friend. Naturally, she is a stinker as an actress and continues here.

I always joke that I am starved for “black shows” so I watch any and everything that we are given. I don’t know if this counts as a “black show”, I think it does, but it’s a great offering. This show is everything “Being Mary Jane” (which Omari also featured on and which I really dislike) wishes it could be. So if you do enjoy “Being Mary Jane”, then you’ll love “Power”. Do not watch while the kiddies are around, lots of steamy love scenes and nudity as common with premium channel shows. Victor Garber is in a story arc and the show has already been picked up for a second season yay. Do me (and yourself) a favor and give it a shout. Feel free to let me know if you don’t like it.

Power airs every Saturday on Starz at 9/8c and is also On Demand
