Suits Recap: Season 3 Episode 2 [Guest Reviewer – Nana]

The second episode of Suits was a marked improvement from the season premiere. There were laughs, there was plenty of court drama, and as usual, Louis got the shitty end of the stick. We opened with Louis’s wooing of Mike after Harvey gave him his blessing and to my surprise, they actually had great chemistry. It was a nice switch-up from the Harvey/ Mike dream team and it served to make Mike a much more likable character.

We saw the conclusion of the Eva Hessington bribery case and although it was satisfactory, the relationship between Eva and her right-hand man Nick was clearly supposed to parallel the relationship between Mike and Harvey. I feel like this could have been handled a little more deftly as it was hard to escape the falling anvils at times. However, it was nice to see the return of Gary Cole (a fan favorite in ‘The Good Wife’) in the role of Harvey’s antagonist Cameron Dennis.

“Ugh Rachel!” I actually lost count of the number of times I made this statement while watching the episode. Every time I think that she can’t possibly be more self-involved, irritating, or ungrateful, she goes on right ahead and proves me wrong. She tested the limits of her (usually fantastic) relationship with Donna this week and it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out. I’m hoping that Donna will at least tell her about herself and make her grovel before she forgives her (should she choose to do so).

The person that stuck with me this episode was of course Louis. I think the writers have done a great job with his character over the course of the series and he’s become so much more than your standard cartoon villain. His relationship with Mike sizzled and they work extremely well together. Louis pulled out all the stops to show Mike that he could thrive under his mentorship and the look on his face when he realized that Mike had chosen Harvey was devastating. Louis has been the subject of many, many undeserved slights at Pearson Hardman/ Darby and it’ll be interesting to see how he deals with this latest one.

All in all, this was a vintage Suits episode and I’m looking forward to seeing what the rest of the season has to offer.
