25 Movies To Watch Before Oscar Night 2024

It’s about that time again, awards season has been in full swing the last few weeks and the grand finale is in two weeks with the Academy Awards. Year after year, the number of movies I get to see keep dropping and with the amount of tv shows coming out, I don’t see it getting any better. I enjoyed a lot of the movies that I saw and I feel like they were less stuffy than previous years. As always, I think we already know who the winners are and my only maybe is for Best Actress between Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone.

Anyways, to be up to speed on the ceremony here are the movies you should catch up on. For those available on streaming, I’ll let you know where you can watch (for free)

  1. American Fiction – I enjoyed this one. A little bit of seriousness, satire and good acting. Sterling K. Brown was a standout for me and I am so glad he got noticed by the Academy.
  2. Anatomy of a Fall – This is half english/half french and might also be my favorite of the bunch. You know I really liked it because it has a vague ennding and I wasn’t bothered.
  3. Barbie – Some like to call this “woke” but I liked this and was in awe of how Greta Gerwig managed to turn this into a worthwile story (Max)
  4. The Holdovers – This sleeper movie could be considered slow but it had layers and was filled with subtle performances. A touching one (Peacock)
  5. Killers Of The Flower Moon – Yes it’s 3hr+ but honestly it didn’t feel long to me. I thoroughly enjoyed this and everyone brought their acting A game (Apple TV+)
  6. Maestro – Another good performance by Bradley Cooper (that won’t get him an Oscar) but it’s not the most exhiliarating and could honestly work as background noise (Netflix)
  7. Oppenheimer – Another 3hr+ movie that was filled with great acting. It didn’t catch my attention till the 4th quarter. Not sure I think RDJ deserves the win but Emily Blunt was great! (peacock)
  8. Past Lives – Another sleeper and poignant movie that didn’t do for me what it did for most but I’d still recommend (Apple TV+)
  9. Poor Things – Have not seen
  10. The Zone of Interest – have not seen
  11. Rustin – have not seen (Netflix)
  12. Nyad – have not seen (Netflix)
  13. The Color Purple – Enjoyed this musical remake. Danielle Brooks was the standout for me and I did not expect her to get a nom so I was thrilled when she did (Max)
  14. May December – I found this a tad disjointed (Netflix)
  15. The Boy and The Heron – have not seen
  16. Elemental – This was cute (Disney Plus)
  17. Napoleon – Have not seen (Apple TV+)
  18. Society of the Snow – have not seen (Netflix)
  19. 20 Days in Mauripol – have not seen
  20. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One – have not seen (Paramount+)
  21. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – have not seen (Netflix)
  22. American Symphony – have not seen (Netflix)
  23. Bobi Wine: The People’s President – have not seen (Disney+)
  24. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – have not seen
  25. Golda – have not seen (Hulu)

A lot of the same movies were nominated for all the categories. I will be updating as I watch more movies. Let me know your thoughts on the movies.
